UPDATE: Kara, Scott had filed for divorce in November of 2013

Victim, shooter identified

ROYSE CITY — UPDATE 6:06 p.m. — Kara Croop's Attorney, Lisa Baker Canterberry, told the Herald-Banner that Kara and Scott had filed for divorce in November of 2013. Scott was leaving the U.S. Navy today, having previously served overseas in Bahrain. Officials confirmed that Kara is at Baylor Hospital in Dallas and is still in critical condition.

A neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the shooting came as a shock to the neighborhood. "You just don't think this kind of thing would happen in Royse City, Texas," he said. "This neighborhood is generally pretty quiet. On Halloween, everyone trick-or-treats and everyone knows each other's children."

Update 3:45 p.m. — Officials have identified Kara Elizabeth Croop, 33, as the victim is this morning's shooting. It appears that her husband, Scott Croop, 39, shot her in the street outside of their home on the 400 block of Cookston Lane before shooting himself. Scott was pronounced dead on the scene from a single gunshot wound, while Kara was severely wounded and transported to a Dallas hospital. According to officials, both individuals were members of the United States Navy. Their duty status is unknown at this time.

Police Chief Jeff Stapleton said names of the victims – a husband and wife – could not be released until next-of-kin had been notified. He said the couple had a 11-year-old daughter who was at school when the shooting occurred.
